About BALAA

Big Apple Leadership Academy for the Arts (BALAA) is a Brooklyn-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering New York City youth through arts, education, and leadership development. Founded in 2019, BALAA was created to ensure that young people, particularly those from historically underserved communities, have access to high-quality, culturally relevant enrichment opportunities that nurture both talent and character.

At its core, BALAA’s mission is to make a positive and lasting impact on the lives of young people by providing musical, visual, and academic enrichment experiences that build confidence, discipline, leadership, and a commitment to excellence.

Through a diverse portfolio of programs, including free after-school programming, summer enrichment, mentorship initiatives, and its signature HBCU-style marching band, The Empire Marching Elite, BALAA creates pathways for youth to explore the arts while developing critical life skills. Students receive academic support alongside training in music, dance, and performance, positioning them for success both in school and beyond.

BALAA is also deeply committed to college and career readiness, introducing students to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and helping them pursue scholarship opportunities through the performing arts. By blending artistic expression with leadership development, BALAA prepares young people to become confident, capable, and culturally grounded leaders of tomorrow.

Rooted in the belief that the arts are essential to human development, BALAA continues to serve as a transformative force in New York City, where creativity is cultivated, potential is realized, and futures are built.
