Every child deserves access to opportunity. At Big Apple Leadership Academy for the Arts (BALAA), we believe transportation should never be the reason a young person misses out on an education, a life-changing experience, or the chance to discover their potential.
Since 2019, BALAA has provided free, high-quality music and arts programming to hundreds of young people throughout Brooklyn. Through our HBCU-style marching band program, students don't just learn music, they build confidence, leadership skills, discipline, teamwork, and pride in their culture.
Our students have traveled beyond New York City to experience Historically Black Colleges and Universities firsthand. They have marched and learned alongside the bands of Virginia State University, Virginia Union University, South Carolina State University, Alcorn State University, Allen University, Morgan State University, Winston Salem State University, and during this upcoming school year, Benedict College and Wilberforce University. These experiences have shown our youth what is possible and inspired them to pursue higher education and excellence.
Our work is producing real results. Through the NYC HBCU Audition Fair, BALAA has helped students earn more than $3.9 million in HBCU scholarship offers, opening doors that once seemed out of reach.
This fall, our impact will grow even further. BALAA will provide after-school programming for nearly 200 students across multiple school communities. Many of these young people depend on us not only for music instruction, but also for a safe place to learn, grow, receive mentorship, and belong after the school day ends. To make that possible, we must transport students safely from their schools to our after-school program every day.
Owning a BALAA minibus will transform what we're able to do. It will allow us to:
-
Safely transport nearly 200 students to and from our after-school program.
-
Expand access for families who otherwise could not participate.
-
Take students to HBCU college tours, band days, and educational experiences.
-
Transport youth to performances, competitions, community events, and service projects.
-
Reduce transportation costs so more resources can be invested directly into our students.
Our goal is to raise $150,000 to purchase and prepare a reliable student minibus that will serve Brooklyn youth for years to come.
When you donate, you aren't simply helping us buy a vehicle. You're helping a young musician get to rehearsal. You're helping a future college student step onto an HBCU campus for the first time. You're helping a family access a free, high-quality after-school program. You're helping remove one more barrier standing between a child and their dreams.
Every mile traveled will carry hope. Every seat will carry possibility. Every donation moves us closer to the future our students deserve. Please join us. Together, let's put every child on the road to opportunity. Make your gift today and help BALAA Drive the Dream.
